Sydney Buchan was born in a cold month in the late 80s to a miner and a nurse. She spent her childhood roaming the mountains of northern Colorado and intensely studying classical ballet. She received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College where she studied history and social theory, particularly focusing on the 19th century Russian revolutionary intelligentsia.
In 2010 Sydney began interning at a boutique commercial production company in NYC where she rose through the ranks to become Head of Production and produced work for Vogue, Vice, iD, the Tate Modern, Fader, and MTV.
In 2013 she started an MFA candidacy in writing and directing at NYU’s Graduate film program where she was the recipient of the Tisch School of the Arts Dean’s Scholarship and the Leo Rosner Foundation Scholarship. She completed her MFA in 2017 with her thesis film ‘Round Right’, for which she received the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Grant.
She has recently relocated to Lisbon, Portugal to write.
